Jubara
Jubara, Tuesday, 25.10.05, AMObservers: Shlomit S, Maya M (reporting)07:30-09:00Closure, very few people pass at the checkpoint. At the southern point (Jubara): A young man and a child are detained, the man’s id. has been taken from him. He says that the boy is his brother, accompanying him to sell some merchandise in the village. We see the bags of mopping cloths. The soldier says he knows the boy and that the two are not brothers. He says the boy doesn’t have a permit and therefore can’t pass. An elderly man points at some newspapers and says he wants to sell them in the village. His permit is expired and he is denied entrance. One of the soldiers wants to tear it up – “it confuses us”, he says. The man begs him not to and finally another soldier marks something on the permit with a pen and hands it back. For a while the man just stands there, hoping they will change their minds. He desperately walks back to Tul Karem, slowly, resting at the side of the road. We thought maybe he is fasting. “If I let him through he will make a mess”, says the soldier to us. Four more men are detained upon exiting Jubarah, they were working there without a permit. At the northern point: (Tulkarm): Very few are allowed to pass, walking or in taxis, mainly to and from Jubara and Shufa.
