Bethlehem and the surroundings, Nuaman, Tuesday morning, 25.4.2006Observers: Yehduit A. Tamar A. (reporting)Natanya translating.6.15 – 8.00 The closure continues. It is already two weeks that we have not seen any workers passing through Nuaman to their work at the building sites in Jerusalem. Practically the only ones passing are students going from Nuaman to El Has. On the way we met I. who told us that the soldiers sometimes demand from pupils ages 10 or 12 to show their birth certificates so as to prove that they live in Nuaman and allow them to return home.At the passage to El Has are two jeeps of the border police and a couple of 10s of metres to the north which used to be another passage to the cemetery of El Has is another jeep. The soldiers are bored and one says “Come. Let’s make a little trip. There are some interesting groups.’ One of these interesting groups are workers sitting in a field in front of their houses hoping that some jeep will pass and take them to work. They are not in the municipality of Jerusalem and so long as they do not go into Nuaman they are not illegal residents. But in spite of that the border police decide to check them. One of the jeeps goes up to El Has and the workers flee for their lives. 7.15 At this moment punctually a terrible noise comes up from the wadi and the work on the new checkpoint is begun.
