Ar-Ram, Qalandiya, Tuesday, 10.8.04, PMNorah O., Tali S., Iris B., Roni H., (reporting)guests: Anat H., Zvi S., Yair A.Ar-Ram. 16:30, 5 detainees, hostile and uncooperative soldiers.A couple, heading for fertiliy treatment in East Jerusalem. Only the womanis a Jerusalem resident. We ask Safadi about this matter, but when wereceive the answer that they are supposed to have a so called “family card”,which proves their status as a couple, they have already given up andreturned north.A man, planning to take his son to an optometrist in East Jerusalem, wasrefused and returned north.A laborer heading back to his home in Bet Hanina, was refused.A man returning from the American Embassy, where he has applied for a visa, was held up for having entered Jerusalem illegally. These cases demonstrate once more the disasterous consequences for thePalestinian population who is cut off from the administrative and healthservices of their city, Jerusalem. Between17:00 and 17:15 four laborers going north were detained at thecheckpoint for having entered Jerusalem illegally. This reminded me of aslogan we have seen on the bulletin board of a brigade commander: “Keep thepopulation in a state of constant uncertainty”. Until now the passagenorthbound at Ar-Ram has been open. Yesterday the soldiers decided to targetlaborers, to check them when they feel relatively safe and to punish themretrospectively for having worked a day in Jerusalem! They had to fill outthe infamous forms and their risks to be fined and arrested were growing.Hayim, the representative of the DCO at Ar-Ram, was rather hostile anddeclared that “he does not work for Machsomwatch”. Since we arerepresentatives of the Israeli civil society, this is in contrast to the”officially declared” task of the Civil Administration to serve theinterests of the civil population and to be accountable to it.Qalandiya, 17:40 – 19:40. The tension that was felt on Monday afternoon had subsided. There were many soldiers at the c.p. and the passage for those who are allowed to pass, was relatively smooth.
