Qalandiya, 5.4.06 Wednesday PMObservers: Ruthy B., Hanna T., and Ivonne M. (reporting)The Wall separating east Ar-Ram from west Ar-Ram, and surrounding the new checkpoint has been completed. Only blue IDs and special permits with green IDs can go through the checkpoint to Jerusalem and villages south of the Qalandya checkpoint. In the car lane going north towards Ramallah, no trucks were allowed through. When a driver asked the soldier: “What should I do?” he answered: “Don’t know” and ordered him to make a U turn and go back where he came from.On the car lane going south towards Jerusalem and the 443 Road, only the driver is allowed through. Anyone else in the car is obligated to go out and cross the checkpoint by foot. After a while the soldiers change the order and say anyone above 60 may remain in the car and go through the car-lane checkpoint. Palestinians and foreigners are very angry and frustrated, you can feel the anger in the air. People don’t look at us, they go out of the car and walk with a very straight back towards the pedestrian checkpoint. We feel very ashamed that people are humiliated in this way and cannot face this humiliation and leave this site ourselves.Among the drivers going north towards Ramallah we meet a friend, Peter, who tells us he has been to Ashdod to recover his car which was stolen in Ramallah and taken to Israel. Some would call that “poetic justice” and others, “petty crime in reverse”.At the pedestrian checkpoint there are very few people. No vendors, no one to buy. However, regardless of so few people, still long lines and waiting. They are sent from one entrance to another, also to entrances that are not manned by soldiers. A worker going back from Jerusalem to Kufer Akab tells us he had to wait from 6 to 9 this morning when only 2 entrances were active and everyone went through a very detailed check and he arrived very late at work. The amount of people who work in Jerusalem and cross the checkpoint in the morning is much larger than those who cross in the afternoon. A car driver told us he comes from old Bet Hanina and has to go through Ramallah and it takes him 50 minutes to reach the checkpoint in order to cross southward.The amount of parking place at the new checkpoint is impressive. Who will use it? Is it intended to make foreigners believe this is an “International Terminal”?We leave the checkpoint and drive back to Jerusalem through west Ar-Ram. At the point where the Wall of Ar-Ram ends and the fence begins, a new checkpoint has been established at the precise place where the old checkpoint of 2001 was. It is still not institutionalized and still no strict orders are issued and cars and people cross from one side to the other.
