Ar-Ram, Qalandiya, 14.5.2007, Monday morningObservers: Ronnie P. Ruthie R., Natanya translatingAr-Ram 7.15 Only a few people, mainly pupils, pass through with no problem. A man without a permit tries unsuccessfully to pass and though he keeps trying the border police refuse politely. He continues to stand and wait. Qalandiya 8.00Here also there are few people but they are harassed by the policewoman who keeps sending them from one turnstile to another while shouting through the microphone. We asked her to restrain her voice but the harassment kept on in a way that we have not seen before. Ronnie phoned and complained to Ophir but this did not take immediate effect. The turnstile at the entrance where we were standing which should have been open was closed, and when Ronnie went in according to her turn it imdeiately shut behind her. She went to speak to the captain and he mocked her in answer. The woman soldier behind the window said that it had been closed because of her. When I asked her if she knew that Palestinians also had the right to be in a hurry she shut me up impatiently. At Ar-Ram We saw a Palestinian lawyer, Bulos, who lives on the other side of the checkpoint and each day goes to his work in Jerusalem arguing vehemently and in very good Hebrew with the person responsible for the checkpoint about a border policeman who each time and without a reason stops him and checks his car very carefully. The person answered him politely but justified the border policeman with the magic words that “Those are the orders” which closed the conversation.
