Qalandiya and Anata, Tuesday, 19.9.06, PMObservers: Mor B., Roni H. (reporting)Because of the high security alerts we anticipated a very rough shift. But, as we learned in our 5 year long experience, there is no way to guess. “Keep the population in a state of uncertainty”We drove to Qalandiya through Hisme. At checkpoint Leel we noticed a highly visible sign of permanence: a watchtower was erected. When we passed no vehicle was checked.16:00 Qalandiya car crossing.Only one lane was operating. 30 – 40 cars were waiting. We heard a soldier through the loudspeaker addressing a co-passenger: “Please (!), go by foot to the pedestrians’ checkpoint”. All cars to Jerusalem were thoroughly checked and the queue moved very slowly. Pedestrians’ crossing. The entry to the DCO was already closed. We met an angry man coming out from there who spent 8 hours there to receive a one day permit for his wife only to accompany their little daughter to the eye clinic St.Jones. He asked a permit for himself, but was refused. His wife does not speak Hebrew and he is worried how they will get along without him….Only one turnstile was operating. While we were waiting, 3 unaccompanied children (about 10 – 12) were called by the woman soldier into the control room. After 10 minutes they came out rather amused and laughing, but they had to return to the north. The soldier once more called after them and wanted obviously to complete her educational lesson, but the children were already far away. In the meantime there was no checking and more and more people had joined the line. Sitting in the “waiting room” we watched children playing and turning it into a playground (with water games). Thus this rather big and unused area got some kind of usage.A young peddler, who sold children’s clothes and sun glasses was called on the loudspeaker to get out from the checkpoint area. “This here is not a market!” The boy moved his things two meters and continued his business. He was now out of sight of the soldier and left in peace. We used the car crossing to drive south to Jerusalem. Wait was only 5 minutes because now 3 lanes were operating. Only the trunk was checked. We drove along the western side of the wall and could get right through to Beit Hanina. We came out on the main road connecting Beit Hanina to the French Hill junction. But part of the road is rather bad.17:30 AnataA very long line of cars trying to get to Jerusalem at rush hours. Probably because of the security alert, every car was thoroughly checked and every driver’s ID. We counted 20 minutes for a car to make a distance of 150 meters. We heard many complaints about the Jerusalem Municipality that does not collect garbage and does not repair the roads (on the Jerusalem side, of course)
