Qalqiliya

06:30- 06:50  – Vehicles coming out of the city carrying an Israeli plate are checked very thoroughly, trunk, interior etc. Palestinian cars pass freely. Entrance is fast. The Border Police manning the checkpoint is joined by an elderly seamline volunteer whose presence here seems to be completely reduntant, but for the need of certain Israeli men to play soldiers to the day they die, and while at it try to joke with MW volunteers.
The policeman explains in a friendly way that the distinction between Israeli and Palestinian vehicles is for security's sake.

    • Qalqilya is surrounded on all sides by the separation barrier. The only exit from the city is in the east of the city on the road that leaves the city in an easterly direction. This is where the checkpoint was located. When the checkpoint was active until 2009 our shifts watched long queues of cars being inspected at the only exit from the city to the West Bank. The checkpoint was canceled, but there is a military presence at the entrance to the city.
