The seamstresses, smiling as usual, walk toward us in the ‘sleeve’. We enter the terminal from the “Israeli” side and are asked to leave. The contractor who is building in the Rihan settlement enters with us; he has come to pick up his workers. They do not permit the construction workers in the seam zone to go through. They tell the contractor that perhaps it will be possible on Tuesday. A resident of Zabda, who has an agricultural permit, goes through. He tells us that yesterday he could not pass, and wonders what will happen tomorrow.Shaked, 07.20-08.05The gates are open. Two soldiers are standing near the gate of entry from the seam zone. The list of pupils and the few others permitted to go through has not arrived. The soldiers permit the little children to pass without inspection. The ID cards of the older ones are checked and the boys are asked to open their coats. The soldiers take care to greet each of those they inspect with “good morning” in Arabic and the people reply with a greeting. The teacher and the doctor who works in Tura also went through. A boy who asked to go through to the clinic in Tura was sent to Rihan. This was apparently expected because his father was waiting for him in his car. The young man who is studying in the vocational training center in Jenin arrives; he is the one toward whom a soldier acted violently last week. His arrival causes some excitement among the soldiers and the two security guards standing behind them call the attention of the inspectors to him. He goes through.Rihan, 08.15-09.15In the terminal a detainee is sitting on the floor. A soldier tells us that there are special rooms for detainees. We did not see the rooms.In the vehicle CP there is little traffic. Vehicles loaded with vegetables are waiting in the parking lot. The drivers organized their passage at the District Coordination Office yesterday, as required, and the permits, which are sent from the DCO to the brigade and from there to the battalion, have not yet reached the CP. Later I telephoned the DCO. There are new instructions: the DCO soldiers are not to talk to people from different organizations. Still, the woman soldier did say that they had heard about the problem and that the topic is being dealt with by Fuad, the officer of the CPs. Fuad was not there. I phoned the advanced command post of the brigade and there they did not know about the problem. They promised to check.
