Shekh SaedWednesday, 21.06.2006,AMObservers: Yehudit A., Ora A. (Reporter)Shekh Saed: 06:45 – At the end of the neighbourhood, near the checkpoint, a woman who was not allowed to pass stands and begs to get back the bag of grapes that was taken from her. The commander refuses sternly. We try to persuade him that confiscating the grapes does not add to the security of Israel, but he is not convinced. Other women who were not allowed to leave and whose bags of fruit were confiscated are complaining bitterly. We walk down the dirt road that leads to the nearest area where a car can drive from Zeitim CP. The road is steep and one can easily stumble and slip. It is obvious to us that climbing back will be difficult. The passengers, who arrive from Zeitim CP, are forced to climb this steep hill. We are told about an old man who was sent from Zeitim CP to Shekh Saed and had tremendous difficulty climbing, and about a little girl from Shekh Saed who broke her arm and the soldiers at the checkpoint would not let her pass to the nearby clinic in Jabel Mukaber and sent her to Zeitim CP, she had to walk down, and then drive about an hour on the difficult and dangerous road to Zeitim CP and then to a hospital in Jerusalem. We found out that this is what they do lately: from Zeitim CP they send those who want to come into town to Shek Saed, and when they arrive they are not allowed to pass. The idea is, probably, to prove to the Supreme Court, that there are plenty of people who pass through Shekh Saed and therefore it is to be blocked by a wall. The Supreme Court decided that the inhabitants of Shekh Saed will be allowed to pass through the checkpoint, but the soldiers do not allow it and send them to the Zeitim CP. In our presence the commander refused to allow a man who showed documents that show that he lives there, and that he works in town to go through the checkpoint. A woman who lives there, and works in a hospital in town, told us that she is forced to drive everyday to the Zeitim CP and from there in a cab to work. Those travels cost a lot of money and so, in addition to the effort, and the waste of time, she is burdened also with the monetary expense.
