On the other side the soldiers are pointing their gun towards the boys. Press reporters are all over and so are the people from TIPH and CPT. Small stones are thrown and the children try to climb up the fences over the CP so as not to pass through the magnometer. The soldiers are calm. This is the only CP with a magnometer, the children know they can pass through Abu Snina CP without being scaned. When the situation warms up, a jeep with an officer arrives but he doesn’t do much. We try to call Hebron Police and they refuse to take responsibility. We call Yehuda brigade and speak with the battalion’s officer G. We ask him to let the children pass one between the soldiers so as to calm the situation. The officer tells me that the children come to this CP on purpose to force conflict and the army is not going to give up. At 8.30 the press leaves, a teacher from the girls’ school arrives and takes all the girls trough the magnometer. The boys pass as well. Tel Rumyda: We met Merry, an Australian volunteer who was bitten last week by 3 jewish girls from Hebron while she was trying to protect Palestinian boys from being abused by those girls. She was on her way to report about it in the local police. Further on we met a Palestinian doctor whose clinic is up the hill. He told us how hard it is to survive as Palestinians within Israeli zone. ( Tel Rumyda is a Palestinian subarb ruled by a small minority of jews living on the top of the hill).A friendly soldier stops us and do not let us approach the settlers’ area although it is legal.Kasba: One detainee is released 20 minutes after we arrive. A settler spit when he sees us.Abraham’s area: The friendly soldiers tell us that only 2 families were left in their houses around.Machpela: We were invited for coffee by one of the shop keepers there. It was the first time we realized that only Israelis are allowed around the square, Palestinians have to make a great detour thourgh the Shuhada rd. so as to approach the cave.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
