Hebron and Southern Hills of Hebron, Monday 5.12.2005, MorningObservers: Lea Sh., Michal Z. (reporting)06:30 – 09:30 Sansana CP: No detainees.Samoa: barred by higher dirt mounds and boulders. No way that any vehicle might reach the village. (There are inner roads through el-Pawar).Hebron:No problems at the entrance gate. We began our tour from the Machpela Cave toward Tel-Romeida. The curled barbed wire on the steps to Cordoba school was removed! It has been left at the side of the stairs. We tried to find out with the police whether it is permanent, but they had no answer. (Next shifts: keep attention for developments.) People from the Ecumenical group told us that it occurred yesterday. The principal of the school was glad that the wire was removed but was still unsure whether it was safe for the children to use the stairs. We were glad to see that our presence there is of significance.Lea drew my attention to the fact that the ambulance with the black-orange flag, which is usually posted opposite Beit Haddasa, is extremely hostile toward us. Lea reprimanded the driver on his attitude (as only Lea can) and he looked as if he did not hear. At the Tel-Rumeida CP, the soldier would not let us go further, and made some calls to his friends, because, as usual, our presence was a “provocation”. Only few people passed there, so we did not insist on moving further. The soldiers at the Pharmacy CP told us that the children still gather each morning and refuse to go through the scanning installation on their way to school. A soldier asked us for a leaflet about the purposes of MW. He was keen to learn about us. It is important to carry those leaflets with us on each shift.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.

      Checkpoints observed in H2:

      1. Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
