Hebron Hills Tuesday 30/1/06 AMObservers : Yaela L, Elena L (reporting)6:30-9:10Summary: We hurried our visit to the CPs because we had to getr to Tawani by 8:45 in order to pick up J. and others who had been summoned to testify in court in Beersheba. 8 detainees were observed at a flying CP on route 317 near Samoa just before Yatir army camp. Close to the Humanitarian gate there were posters saying: “Soldier/Policman –If you have joined up in order to expel Jews, you might as well join the ranks of Hamas directly” – posters very like those which have already been observed at Tapuach junction and near Hawarra.Sansana CP: there were two blue policemen there as well. No detainees. 3 Palestinian workers were standing on the Israel side waiting to be picked up.Dahariya turn –off: Closed. There were lorries and other vehicles parked on the Dahariya side.Karame: The spikes on route 60 have been removed. No army presence.Dura –Al Fawwar: the crossing is open to motor traffic in both directions. Cement cubes have been placed on route 60 to slow traffic sown. No soldiers were visible.Beit Haggai: no CPFrom a little before the Hebron DCO there is a new metal railing along the right side of route 60; it is about 30 cms high. There are also large flattened spaces being worked on –as if preparing a large parking lot for the bulldozers. Sheep’s Crossing: open to pedestriansonly, as usual – no soldiers visible. One of the Palestinians we spoke to said believed that “Hamas will bring peace”. A female university student (studying animal husbandry) pointed out three houses – two on the Hebron side and one on the Yatta side and said that the soldiers sleep there. There was no camouflage netting usually hung from houses taken over by the army.Junction of routes 60 and 356: Flying CP. One of the soldiers replied to our question that they were checking ” to see if the people were OK (ie not suspect)”. On the way back we saw the soldiers dismantling the CP. Shiyukh- Hebron: Open as usual only to pedestrians. A lot of school children (boys and girls) were crossing the very dangerous route 60. No soldiers were observed.East Halhul- Hebron: open to motor traffic in both directions. No soldiers were observed.Humanitarian Gate: Closed and no one there. No soldiers in the army post on route 35.Near the gate there are posters saying: “Soldier/Policman –If you have joined up in order to expel Jews, you might as well join the ranks of Hamas directly”( see also the Hawarra report of 29.1.06)Zif junction: Closed. A taxi was waiting on the route 317 side of the barrier.Tawani: We didn’t go into the village. We merely waited at the turn-off for J and his companions, who had been summoned before the court in Beersheba to testify against the thugs from the illegal outpost of Ma’on Farm. A military vehicle came out of the path to Ma’on settlement and pulled up behind us. The soldiers asked why we had stopped. We explained. It turned out that they had thought that out car had broken down. It is worth noting that when J and his friends joined us the soldiers did not demand to see their IDs or other papers.On route 317 near Samoa, a little before Yatir camp: We saw a tractor and 8 detainees (including a child) at a flying CP. The soldiers (reservists) told us that detainees had claimed they wanted to work their fileds but the soldiers didn’t believe them because “they know it’s forbidden to approach their fileds along this (short) route; and here it’s “the area adjoining the (future) fence” (kav hatefer)’ and the Palestinians can “infiltrate into Israel”. But when, in our presence, one of the detainees passed his license (written in Hebrew) to the soldier in charge, the latter said : “why didn’t you show me this before?” !!- and allowed the holder of the license and 4 of his companions to carry on his way. Three men were still detained when we had to leave because we had to get the Tawani people to court on time.Sansana – One of the blue policemen stopped us and briefly checked all of our IDs. Our driver I., dropped Yaela and myself off at Shoket and then continued with the Tawani witnesses to the courthouse where Hagit was waiting for them.
