South Hebron
Hebron and the Southern Hills of Hebron, 30.5.06, MorningObservers: Michal Z., Hagit B. (reporting06:30 – 10:30Sansana CP has been removed towards north, on road No. 60, which will be the final border crossing point. The police border soldiers man the CP. A few Palestinian workers – we observed seven – crossed it without special problems. Road No. 60: All the barriers are in place. Works are carried on along the eastern side of the road in order to obstruct the villagers from reaching and cultivating their fields. Near Samoa all the ways are completely blocked again. Pedestrians were seen on the road. (Obviously they do not need bodyshops).Dura el-Pawar, Karame, Dahariyya, the Humanitarian CP, Halhoul East and the bridge between Halhoul and Hebron: The pillboxes are manned but there were no flying CPs in these hours. Traffic flows as usual. People cross the road 60. But in general we observe very few people. HebronWe encounter the usual depressing sight of the desolate H2 zone. The girls go to the Cordoba school in nice dresses to celebrate the last day of the schoolyear. We told the Principal of the School, that the film of Noith and Dan Geva, in which she stars, was screened again on TV. There are no detainees at the CP near the Cave of the Ancestors. At a CP we encounter four women in orange. One of them told us that she saw the MW exhibition in Tel-Aviv. They brought the soldiers candies and soft drinks. A jeep of the blue police patrols and secures the crossing of the young students.Roads 356, 317Zif Junction: The gate was open. A little to the east and southern direction a bulldozer heaps dirt barriers up. A whole military squad protects the operation.Apart from this, no one is seen on these apartheid routes.

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
Checkpoints observed in H2:
- Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
- Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
