South Hebron Hills
Hebron Hills, Tuesday 29/8/06, AMWatcher: Lea S. and Shlomit T.(Reporting)06:30- 09: 30 AM7:00 Ramadin stopwatch: one car passed with no delays from Ramadin to Daharia.Dura el Fawar: 3 cars are turning around in the new round-about. Other than that, the roads are almost empty. A few people are walking to cultivate their vines. The lucky ones are riding on a donkey.Sheep Junction: People are walking from town to village and vice versa.Hebron: On the main street, a citizen told us in a very good Hebrew, that 2 months ago his house was saved from a fire started up by settlers. He and his family are closed at home, his kids are not allowed to play in the street, and they even can not listen to loud music. In any conflict with the Jewish settlers, the soldiers are in favor of the seconds and ask him to go back home. He complained about it to Peace activists that were visiting there (from one of the Universities?). They noted down his complaint but nothing happened since. We visited in a small Museum in memory of Tarpa”t happenings in Hebron . (The Museum is in Beit Hadasa, under the stairs). No doubt these people are working hard to explain themselves and do not miss money for that.8:29 Shayuch pass: people are wlking from side to side – mainly older people – the traffic flow is disturbing. Upper Halhul bridge – Traffic moving.Lower bridge – Traffic moving.

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
Checkpoints observed in H2:
- Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
- Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- Avraham Avinu quarter - watch station
- The pharmacy CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
- Tarpat (1929) CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
- Tel Rumeida CP - guarding station
- Beit Hadassah CP - guarding station

Ramadin and Arab al-Furijat, were established in the suburbs of Dahariya by Bedouins who came from the Be'er Sheva area after 1948. The village of Ramadin, numbers about 6,000 people, is located on the eastern side of the separation barrier. The checkpoint that was established at the entrance to the village (crossing by list only) to prevent passage to Israeli territory was removed in October 2007, and the road to the Meitar checkpoint leading to Israel is open.
