Za’atra Huwwara Beit Furik Monday 7.8.2006 PMObservers: Macky S. Daphna P. (reporting)Natanya translating.12.30 – Three cleaners, probably Palestinians, walk along road 5 from the east of Oranit and are cleaning the sides of the road. Continuing in the direction of Ariel are bags of rubbish which they had already filled.12.45 Za’atara. There are no lines from the west and from the north 37 cars. At the checkpoint are reservists who have been brought in to replace the soldiers who have been sent to Lebanon. At the parking lot there is a detainee who has been there 10 minutes. A bus driver from Jerusalem who cheeked the soldiers. The commander promises to free him in a few minutes.13.00 Crossroads Burin. The checkpoint is not manned on the Hawarra road. On the road which leads to Yishar are 3 cars.13.10 -The commander. A. sees us from a distance and shouts very dissatisfied….”But you have already been here today. “ In the isolation cell in the distance to which we are not allowed to go is a handcuffed man, Samar, who has been there since 8 am because he is said to have made a sexual remark to a woman soldier who told him to lift his shirt and take off his belt. A. passes the shift to the commander L. and tells him that the man endangered the “sexual security” of the soldier. The man wants a cigarette but A. thinks he does not deserve one. He says that he has also received permission from the District Commissioner’s Office and the secret service to keep the man imprisoned for as long as it takes…8 hours. We are still trying to check this story with A. and L. simply opens the door and freeds the man after a little more than 5 hours of imprisonment.O., a soldier who guards the checkpoint post, He insists on aiming his rifle directly at the heads or upper bodies of those being checked. And now and again probably because he is so bored also looks through the aiming device at them. The people look at him in fear. One of them actually has the nerve to grin and aim with his finger at his own head. O. falls upon him. “What? You want a bullet in your head.” He then takes the man;s id and forces himself to walk submissively after himself. Then he tells him to go to the end of the line and holds his id as a guarantee.”Get our of my sight. If you don’t get out of my sight I will fuck you in the face.” The guard asks O. what the man had done and O. replies in anger “What did he do? He had the cheek to laugh at me in my face. I will not let him pass through today.” So it will be done to who has the nerve to laugh of O.14.15 -21 cars wait in line. From what we have been told in the last days trucks who are working “back to back” have to pay but today there is no such thing. The soldiers says that this is come contract which the civil administration has decided on to be paid to a company. The drivers know to tell us that those who are dealing with this payment are a Palestinian and an Israeli who demand 5 shekel from each truck in the entire area. On our return t the checkpint at 15.00 there was a commotion as the result of the firing by Palestinians on soldiers a few minutes previously. It then appeared that as a result of the return fire of the soldiers a Palestinian woman had been wounded . All movement at the checkpoint stopped and the line of trucks lengthened. Army jeeps arrived and we were asked to move away from the area.15.15 Back to Hawarra. Because of the fear that those who had fired at Awarta might try to break through the checkpoint by car there was here also a “closure of life”.15.30 Burin crossroads. No cars.15.37 -10 cars waiting from the north. Two taxi drivers detained while their ids are being checked.

The Huwwara checkpoint is an internal checkpoint south of the city of Nablus, at the intersection of Roads 60 and 5077 (between the settlements of Bracha and Itamar). This checkpoint was one of the four permanent checkpoints that closed on Nablus (Beit Furik and Awarta checkpoints to the east and the Beit Iba checkpoint to the west). It was a pedestrian-only barrier. As MachsomWatch volunteers, we watched therre since 2001 two shifts a day - morning and noon, the thousands of Palestinians leaving Nablus and waiting for hours in queues to reach anywhere else in the West Bank, from the other side of the checkpoint the destination could only be reached by public transport. In early June 2009, as part of the easing of Palestinian traffic in the West Bank, the checkpoint was opened to vehicular traffic. The passage was free, with occasional military presence in the guard tower. Also, there were vehicle inspections from time to time. Since the massacre on 7.10.2023, the checkpoint has been closed to Palestinians.
On February 26, 2023, about 400 settlers attacked the town's residents for 5 hours and set fire to property, such as houses and cars. Disturbances occurred in response to a shooting of two Jewish residents of Har Bracha by a Palestinian Terrorist. The soldiers stationed in the town did not prevent the arson and rescued Palestinian families from their homes only after they were set on fire. No one was punished and Finance Minister Smotrich stated that "the State of Israel should wipe out Hawara." Left and center organizations organized solidarity demonstrations and support actions for the residents of Hawara.Hawara continued to be in the headlines in all the months that followed: more pogroms by the settlers, attacks by Palestinians and a massive presence of the army in the town. It amounted to a de facto curfew of commerce and life in the center of the city. On October 5, 2023, MK Zvi established a Sukkah in the center of Hawara and hundreds of settlers backed the army blocked the main road and held prayers in the heart of the town all night and the next day. On Saturday, October 7, 23 The "Swords of Iron" war began with an attack by Hamas on settlements surrounding Gaza in the face of a poor presence of the IDF. Much criticism has been made of the withdrawal of military forces from the area surrounding Gaza and their placement in the West Bank, and in the Hawara and Samaria region in particular, as a shield for the settlers who were taking over and rioting.
On November 12, 2023, the first section of the Hawara bypass road intended for Israeli traffic only was opened. In this way, the settlers can bypass the road that goes through the center of Hawara, which is the main artery for traffic from the Nablus area to Ramallah and the south of the West Bank. For the construction of the road, the Civil Administration expropriated 406 dunams of private land belonging to Palestinians from the nearby villages. The settlers are not satisfied with this at the moment, and demand to also travel through Hawara itself in order to demonstrate presence and control.(updated November 2023)
