Za’atara Huwwara Beit Furik, Monday 26.11.06 AM Observers: Birya L., Ada H. (Report). 07.50 – Marda and Zeita – Gates wide open. Cars enter and leave Zeita But From Marda there are only pedestrians. 07.55 – Za’atara West – 4 cars in line. 2 lanes are open. 4 soldiers check and let go. Za’atara North – A very long line of cars coming from Hawwara. Drivers say they are waiting for over 2 hours. Only 2 lanes are open. Traffic moves very slowly. The CP commander is hostile but very polite, does not allow us to stand near the CPs and not close to the Palestinians, Saying he is responsible for our safety. Until we move to the side he is pointing he will not be able to pass the people. We moved and stood there.On the other side of the road a police jeep # M-22-766 is stopping Palestinian cars. We crossed the road to see why. When getting there the officer in the jeep called us by the loudspeaker to approach him. We promised we would do it immediately after his officer will finish his discussion with the driver he stopped. Then he ordered him to return the papers to the driver and let him free. Arriving to the jeep the officer warned us about car thieves who “don’t give a damn” and drive fast and carelessly. The female soldier lead the dog to check vehicles on the side while the passengers ordered to get off the cars and stand with their face to the other side.08.40 – Huwwara (The village) – A CURFEW in force since 06.30. Because children threw stones on settlers’ cars today they are penalized. A military jeep called people back from work and schools. Phone calls did not help and at 11.40, on our way back, shops and fuel stations were still closed. Few people and children were sitting bored on the road side. Few cars crossed the village to Hawwara or Zaatra or elsewhere.09.05 – Zuffin Jnc. – The North side is empty. The West side is manned by 2 soldiers. One Palestinian car is being checked.09.15 – Beit Furik – 8 cars are waiting to cross to Nablus. Drivers say they have been waiting for almost 2 hours and the line almost does not move. A small number of pedestrians were being checked fast and crossed the CP. The soldiers who checked cars were slack and it took time to pass each car.Today, as in last weeks, they passed only 3 villages: Beit Furik, Beit Dajan and Jiftlik.2 passengers were told to get off a truck and return. Children were allowed to cross only with a parent.10.00 – Awarta – Today there is more work. Trucks on both sides are exchanging merchandise. Seems that everybody is busy. No one stops to talk.10.15 – Huwwara CP – No limitations today! Every body can cross. It’s because of the elections in Nablus. The CP commander, second lieutenant Y., operates the CP very efficiently, behaves in a humanitarian way towards the passengers, and so do his men (If the CPs reality were not so bad…). He says they expected many people there but only very few arrived.The quarry is working today and causing a lot of dust in the air.11.50 – Zuffin Jnc. – Only the West side of the CP is working. Again, 2 soldiers check one car.11.10 – Za’atara North – A long line of cars coming from Hawwara. At the same time a military car with MPs arrived. They opened another line and traffic started moving faster.
