Soldiers let people cross after a short check up of the IDs, sometimes the packages too. The old regulations of sending the passengers off the bus still exist.07.30 – Barkan Industry Park – The piles of sand and blocks were moved to the sides of the road and instead there is a new iron gate which was opened today. No soldiers were there and cars passed freely. Near by there is a water apparatus which supplies water to Burkin and Kafar Dick. A tanker was there and filled water to take to those villages. 07.50 – Marda and Zeita – The gates are opened.08.00 – Zaatra west – 3 cars in line. Short check ups. In the side a taxi is checked, near by some opened packages. 2 soldiers there are busy checking.Zaatra North – 2 lines open. Fast checking. On the side is a bus and the passengers stand along it waiting to get their IDs back. The CP commander says there are no limitations today only “Wanted” persons are stopped. 08.25 – Burin Jnc. – The CP is back on the Hawwara road. 9 cars stand in line. No CP in the Jit direction. 08.50 – Beit Furik – Lots of people are flowing toward Nablus. Passage is easy and fast. People are smiling – because of the holidays or the ability to cross without any restrictions? Almost no traffic towards Beit Furik.09.25 – Awarta – We see many trucks on both sides of the blocks. Some of them are full with merchandise but the workers are either seated in the hut or mingling. They say there is no work. “ Can you see somebody working here?” They asked us. They also tell us that after ID EL ADCHA this place will close and move to Tul Karem. On both sides of the CP 5-6 there are trucks.09.40 – Hawwara – Lots of people on their way toward Nablus stuck in front of the carousel at the end of a very narrow path. Some of the people try to go behind this path, on a narrower one, holding on to the wire fence with their hands in order not to fall backwards into a depth of about a meter. At the beginning the CP commander tries to turn them back to the marked one but after a while, with so many people are stacked in the permitted course that Micha from the DCO ignored it and let them go round. At the CP itself a small number of passengers are coming from Nablus and cross fast. So are cars. Micha, from DCO tells us that the CP will be a proper passage in August 2007, “ Like the one in Tul Karem”….. It feels like an easy and calm atmosphere all around. 10.25 – Burin Jnc. – A CP only on Hawwara road. 16 Palestinian cars are waiting to be checked. 10.45 – Zaatra North – About 60 cars are in line. A driver, close to the checking stand says he is waiting about 15 minutes there. At the CP only one lane is open. The CP commander and the female dog trainer are having a meal at the entrance of the control tower. After about 10 minutes they get back and open another lane and traffic is faster now. The CP commander says: “ There is nothing to do”. When they eat they have to close one lane and traffic is slower but when finish it goes fast. At the side of the road stands a bus and the passengers wait outside to the IDs checking. A pick up driver is sent to the side of the road and his car checked by the dog. The Huwwara checkpoint is an internal checkpoint south of the city of Nablus, at the intersection of Roads 60 and 5077 (between the settlements of Bracha and Itamar). This checkpoint was one of the four permanent checkpoints that closed on Nablus (Beit Furik and Awarta checkpoints to the east and the Beit Iba checkpoint to the west). It was a pedestrian-only barrier. As MachsomWatch volunteers, we watched therre since 2001 two shifts a day - morning and noon, the thousands of Palestinians leaving Nablus and waiting for hours in queues to reach anywhere else in the West Bank, from the other side of the checkpoint the destination could only be reached by public transport. In early June 2009, as part of the easing of Palestinian traffic in the West Bank, the checkpoint was opened to vehicular traffic. The passage was free, with occasional military presence in the guard tower. Also, there were vehicle inspections from time to time. Since the massacre on 7.10.2023, the checkpoint has been closed to Palestinians.
On February 26, 2023, about 400 settlers attacked the town's residents for 5 hours and set fire to property, such as houses and cars. Disturbances occurred in response to a shooting of two Jewish residents of Har Bracha by a Palestinian Terrorist. The soldiers stationed in the town did not prevent the arson and rescued Palestinian families from their homes only after they were set on fire. No one was punished and Finance Minister Smotrich stated that "the State of Israel should wipe out Hawara." Left and center organizations organized solidarity demonstrations and support actions for the residents of Hawara.Hawara continued to be in the headlines in all the months that followed: more pogroms by the settlers, attacks by Palestinians and a massive presence of the army in the town. It amounted to a de facto curfew of commerce and life in the center of the city. On October 5, 2023, MK Zvi established a Sukkah in the center of Hawara and hundreds of settlers backed the army blocked the main road and held prayers in the heart of the town all night and the next day. On Saturday, October 7, 23 The "Swords of Iron" war began with an attack by Hamas on settlements surrounding Gaza in the face of a poor presence of the IDF. Much criticism has been made of the withdrawal of military forces from the area surrounding Gaza and their placement in the West Bank, and in the Hawara and Samaria region in particular, as a shield for the settlers who were taking over and rioting.
On November 12, 2023, the first section of the Hawara bypass road intended for Israeli traffic only was opened. In this way, the settlers can bypass the road that goes through the center of Hawara, which is the main artery for traffic from the Nablus area to Ramallah and the south of the West Bank. For the construction of the road, the Civil Administration expropriated 406 dunams of private land belonging to Palestinians from the nearby villages. The settlers are not satisfied with this at the moment, and demand to also travel through Hawara itself in order to demonstrate presence and control.(updated November 2023)

Marda
There are about 2500 inhabitants in the village. A large part of their lands was confiscated for the benefit of the settlement of Ariel, some of whose buildings are adjacent to the village.
They often feel under siege. At both entrances to the village from the main road (505) there are checkpoints and the army does close the yellow arms from time to time. The inhabitants of Marda own olive groves behind a fence. Rarely are they allowed to cultivate their agricultural plots
