Checking posts for traffic traffic east and northbound – unmanned.

A single lane checking cars coming from Nablus – southbound, no waiting line.

Large posters in Hebrew cover the concrete slabs around the compound:

"A Jewish soldiers supports Jews" and "The war is against the Arabs".

 On our way from Za'tara/Tapuach we stopped at our regular grocer's in Huwwara to catch up.
To our question we were told that now passage into and from Nablus is by vehicle alone, it is forbidden to walk in the vicinity of the checkpoint. We proceeded to ask about the current situation in the villages of the area – whether the army and Border Patrol are still harassing them and carrying on nightly attacks as they very often used to do. The young men we spoke with said these things have not been happening lately. 15:30 Huwwara Checkpoint

3 active checking posts for vehicles. A sniffer-dog and trainer do their business as usual, and we note that they are back to dog-inspecting the interior of vehicles as well. One car out of 7-10 is inspected.

A team of Ecumenical Accompaniers arrived about the same time we did to count cars and time inspections. While standing there, their driver waited for them by their car at the entrance to the now abandoned huge taxi park adjacent to the checkpoint, but for some Israeli license-plated cars (of Israeli citizens who enter Nablus without their vehicles). Soon the DCO representative (Nabil) hurried over to him and yelled that he must not be there. Eventually he yielded to the EAs' pleas to let their driver wait for them a while longer.

And here we suddenly run into pictures from the past… A growing line of cars wait and wait to be inspected on their way out of Nablus, on a single lane with the incoming cars, by a single soldier. Incoming traffic stocks up too, and the line sometimes bulges into the apartheid road dangerously, where the settlers fly by in their cars speeding to Elon More.

We call the army hotline and they promise to look into it. In view of the opposite procedures of late, we cannot help assuming that this is some private initiative of a soldier or checkpoint commander who are bored and have found a way to harass Palesitnians again. Indeed their adrenalin rises as they notice our presence across the road, and start horsing around, and shouting things like "What, you think I'm gonna beat up a fifty-year old woman?" "Well, here they are, those Watch women"…

Suddenly a second soldier approaches his mate, moves away the red plastic barrier that blocked the second lane, and quickly enough the two waiting lines evaporate, without any inspection whatsoever. Perhaps they got a telephone call?

If they did, it was not much help. The whole saga begins anew. Lines rapidly grow in both directions, inspections stop for moments at a time, and it becomes increasingly clear that our presence provokes them to play with the Palestinians' nerves. We call the hotline time and again. Emphasizing that we actually heard the soldiers shouting that they're doing it because of us. After hearing from Palestinian drivers that this indeed was the case and they prefer we leave, we did, at 17:00.

17:35, on our way back to Israel we stopped for several minutes opposite Azun Atme Checkpoint to observe. It was empty of any pedestrians, but for one Palestinian woman.

בדרכנו מזעתרה/תפוח עצרנו להתעדכן מעט במכולת בחווארה, ולשאלתנו ענו לנו שעכשיו המעבר לתוך ומתוך שכם הוא ברכב בלבד, אסור להסתובב שם ברגל. המשכנו ושאלנו איך המצב בכפרים – האם עדיין יש הצקות ליליות והיטפלויות מהסוג שפקדו אותם תקופות ארוכות ומרות. נענינו בשלילה,אין עכשיו דברים כאלה לדברי הבחורים אתם שוחחנו.

 3 עמדות לבדיקת רכב פעילות. כלבנית וכלב טירון עוסקים בשלהם, יש לציין שחזר הנוהג לשלוח את הכלב לרחרח ולרייר בתוך המכונית. מכונית אחת מכל 7-10 נבדקת כך. צוות של המלווים האקומניים הגיע באותו זמן כמונו למחסום כדי לספור מכוניות עוברות ולתזמן בדיקות,כהרגלם. בזמן שעמדו שם, המתין הנהג שלהם ליד רכבו בכניסה לחניון המוניות הצמוד למתחם המחסום,והנטוש כעת פרט לכמה מכוניות בעלות לוחיות זיהוי ישראליות (של אזרחים ישראלים שנכנסים לשכם ללא רכבם). עד מהרה זינק המת"ק (נ.) וצעק לעברו שאסור לו לשהות שם. לבסוף נעתר לבקשת האקומנים  להרשות לנהג שלהם להמתין להם שם עוד קצת.

והנה דווקא פה פתאום אנחנו עדות למחזות מן העבר... תור תופח והולך של מכוניות ממתין לבידוק ביציאה משכם, מסלול אחד בלבד מתפקד, בו חייל יחיד בודק. גם מכוניות בדרכם לתוך שכם נאלצות להמתין ולהתייבש, לעתים אף מסתכנות ממש כי התור משתרך לתוך כביש האפרטהייד עליו עוברות ממש בטיסה מכוניות המתנחלים מאלון מורה.אנו מתקשרות למוקד לדווח ומבטיחים לנו לברר. לנוכח ההתנהלות ההפוכה בזמן האחרון אין מנוס מהמחשבה שזו יוזמה פרטית של חייל/מפקד מחסום משועממים שמחפשים להציק לפלסטינים.ואכן האדרנלין עולה כשהם מבחינים בנו, ונפתחת מסכת השתטויות, כולל צעקות מסוג"מה, נראה לך שארביץ לאישה בת 50?" "נו כן, יש לנו פה נשות ווטש..." פתאום חייל שני ניגש ומסיט הצדה את מחסום הפלסטיק האדום שחוסם את מסלול הבדיקה השני,וחיש קל מחסלים את שני התורים, מבלי לבדוק אף רכב. אולי הגיע להם טלפון מלמעלה?אם כן, זה לא ממש עזר. כל הסיפור מתחיל מההתחלה. תור גדל במהירות בשני הכיוונים, עצירת בדיקות מכוונת, וסימנים ברורים והולכים שכל זה בגלל נוכחותנו שמגרה אותם לשחק בעצבי הפלסטינים.הפניות שלנו למוקד שבו ונשנות. הדגשנו באוזני המוקדניות שבאוזנינו שמענו את החיילים צועקים שזה בגללנו, ולאחר שגם נהגים סיפרו שזה המצב ממש – עזבנו את המקום ב-17:00.

 17:35 בדרכנו חזרה ארצה עצרנו למספר דקות מול מחסום עזון עתמה, שהיה ריק מכל נפש פלסטינית,פרט לאישה אחת שנכנסה.
