Aisha, 5, will not reach the hospital – the Palestinian reality of the checkpoints

| Morning

The Qalandiya Checkpoint is a steel and filth monster. As we approached it at 6:30 a.m. we tried to decide which of the closed-off ways would bring us there. They are all surrounded by cement, and all the people exiting the checkpoint are in a hurry to get to the road, at the risk of being run over by the exiting vehicles. Above this entire network of closed off roads rises a long, winding bridge and people hurrying to get to their work or studies. They are all nicely dressed, after their morning shower, in honor of the people they will serve that day, until they return in the evening, tired, to that monster just to get home.

Ayisha, a delicate 5-year-old girl, came with her grandmother to the Qalandiya Checkpoint. Ayisha is paralyzed since birth, from her hips downward. We made Ayisha an appointment at the Alin Hospital in Israel 3 months earlier. There they were supposed to examine her and recommend the ensuing treatment. She was born to a poverty-stricken Bedouin family in the Palestinian Jordan Valley, where she has never received any kind of treatment. The hospital turned in an application to let Ayisha and her grandmother into Israeli Jerusalem (the girl’s mother was hurt in a road accident a few years ago and could not accompany her daughter). The hospital received the required permission. Everything was perfectly planned. Ayisha and her grandmother would get to the Qalandiya Checkpoint in a taxi arranged ahead of time from the Palestinian side, and we would come from the Israeli side, pass over to the Palestinian one, and help her get through.

How naïve of us!! Ayisha and her grandmother, festively dressed, stuck close to us facing all the Israeli forces with their arms dawn. They don’t know how to get along and are scared to death. Then we heard the horrible news – the child gets through, not her grandmother. Only the mother may accompany the child. We tried to explain that the mother was ill. Gravely ill. Nothing doing! It didn’t help that the appointment was made 4 months ago, the hospital had the permission for both of them to cross over, and that if the hospital had known that only a first-degree relative was allowed through, we would be spared this entire saga. We were chased away from the checkpoint by yells and the accompanying armed policeman, while the child and her alarmed grandmother were taken into the locked Civil Administration room.

There they sat for an hour and a half, and were chased away to the Palestinian side without saying a word to them. The bossy and violent cruelty of the policemen was unbearable. Little Ayisha and her grandmother Hana came out humiliated from the checkpoint and didn’t know how to order a taxi. The father came especially to get them out of the occupier’s claws who never once looked at this sweet smiling child’s face and prevented her – with drawn rifles – from getting medical care.

The policemen prevented us from crossing over to the Palestinian side again, so we drove to Jerusalem and from there to Ayisha’s home at the Jiftlik village in the Palestinian Jordan Valley. We waited there for about an hour for Ayisha and her grandmother to get home with Ayisha’s father. Our hearts ached at the sight of the humiliation they both underwent. Exhausted Ayisha only wanted to go to sleep. The father let us know that whatever happens, he would not let his daughter undergo such trauma again. We tried to explain to him that he was endangering her life, and he answered that “From now on, only God would help her”.

Location Description

  • Qalqiliya checkpoint

See all reports for this place
    • Qalqilya is surrounded on all sides by the separation barrier. The only exit from the city is in the east of the city on the road that leaves the city in an easterly direction. This is where the checkpoint was located. When the checkpoint was active until 2009 our shifts watched long queues of cars being inspected at the only exit from the city to the West Bank. The checkpoint was canceled, but there is a military presence at the entrance to the city.
