"This road leads to a Palestinian locality. Entry by Israeli citizens is dangerous." That’s different from the version referring to the prohibition against entering Area A, which is illegal. Such signs have recently been erected all along Highway 60, at all the entrances to Palestinian localities.

A new barrier on the way connecting Bani Na'im and route 60 was erected after the demonstrations yesterday. The vineyard belonging to the settler Menachem Livni is located on that route too and the barrier was erected between the vineyard and the town.

A "flying CP" at the descent to Jit. Many Palestinian vehicles wait in line without moving. In answer to our question the commander says, "It is an order of the last few days". There were 5 soldiers, road spikes and stop signs. As we stand there photographing, the road spikes and stop signs were collected and the vehicles were allowed to pass with no checking. We phoned the operation room to check and were told that they would check with the unit. From there we got the answer, "There had been no "flying CP" and no order to stop and check vehicles."

A Toyota pickup truck blocks the road. Palestinians are detained. A soldier proudly informs us of a “battalion run". At the water station dozens of plastic cups scattered on the road. The commander is in a very good mood, promises that everyone is drinking and when it’s over they’ll remove the discarded cups.

18 cars on the roadside are waiting to cross to the West Bank, the soldiers collecting IDs from the passengers. People had already gotten out of the burning hot cars when we arrived, it’s 37 degrees Celsius in the shade but there isn’t any shade. They’ve been waiting more than half an hour. Most of the cars are crowded with laborers returning from working in the settlements’ fields; they began at 5 in the morning, in the sun, and because of the Ramadan fast they didn’t eat or drink. Now they’re stuck here, at the checkpoint. People are very angry, also at us standing helplessly before them. In desperation they’re seeking help, not sympathy…
